Volunteering at Tucson Yoga

Karma Yoga, also known as "the yoga of action," is the practice of serving others, and is one of the yogic paths to self-realization.  Sometimes called Seva, or "Service to Others," volunteerism is essential to the day-to-day operations of Tucson Yoga.  Volunteering is also an excellent way to plug-in to our yoga community.  There are many opportunities including:

  • Front Desk Volunteering
  • Cleaning
  • Director's Assistant (random jobs)
  • Handyperson
  • Help During Classes (read below)
  • Professional consultation (see below)

Professional consultations
We are also interested in volunteer help from professional consultants and advisors.  If you are a builder/contractor, carpenter, website developer, attorney, accountant, or other professional who would like to lend your expertise, please contact us.

To Inquire
To apply to our volunteer program, please contact Joanna at joanna@tucsonyoga.com and describe which volunteering jobs interest you.  Please also describe your weekly schedule and availability.  If you have any special skills to offer, please mention them.

Seva During Classes
Any student can help their teacher before and after classes.  Here are some ideas:

Roll-up Rental Mats - If you arrive at a morning class early and rental mats are hanging in the back, roll them up neatly and replace them on the rental mat shelf.  (We do not wash them after every usage, we just air them out overnight and wash them once a month).
Tidy-up Blankets and Blocks - Re-fold any blankets that are sloppy, arrange blankets so that the fringe-end is facing toward the back, and tidy-up the stack.  Move blocks off of the topmost shelves, since many people can't reach them up there.
Sweep the Floors - If you notice that the studio's floors or the outside entryway need sweeping, ask where the broom and dustpan are so that you can sweep.
Pick Up Trash Outside - It's a neverending task to keep up with the litter outside.  As a student you can help!  Pick it up, throw it away inside, and wash your hands in the bathroom sink.
Print and Post Flyers - Anyone can print flyers from our website, and you can post them wherever you work and play.  Look for the PDF icon on the info page for any workshop or event that you'd like to help promote.  You can also print and post our class schedule - look for the PDF icon on the Class Schedule page.  Take extra class schedules when you're at the studio to give to friends and coworkers.
Help New Students - If you notice that someone is a brand-new student, welcome them and introduce yourself!  If a new person seems confused about anything, ask how you can help.
Help Make Space - In large classes, if you see that someone is taking up too much space, or that they're not using the mat lines, kindly introduce them to the mat lines, or ask them to make space.  Always be kind and friendly.
Turn Lights After Class - You can help the teacher by turning certain lights on after class ends.  Notice (or ask) where the light-switches are for the front-desk area and the back prop area.  (Teachers often get caught-up in conversations, and the studio stays dark while students are trying to find their things).
Help Control Disruptions - In classes we are often disturbed by people talking loudly outside.  If you're waiting outside for a class to end and you notice someone talking loudly near our gates, you can let the person know that a class is in session and ask them to talk more quietly.  Asking people to move away from the gates can also be very helpful.  Always be kind and friendly.
