Everyone in Tucson must realize what a gem you have in Tucson Yoga.
I was a regular in Debbie's classes for about a year before moving up to Portland Oregon. I have yet to find a yoga community I enjoy as much as I enjoyed Tucson Yoga.
This studio does a wonderful job with welcoming all skill levels and accommodating a larger class size. All of the instructors were gracious and helpful. And most impressive, you can not beat the price. For a wonderful and fulfilling class, you only pay $6. I have yet to find a class in the Portland area so fulfilling - and nowhere near the price. Tucson Yoga makes yoga affordable and enjoyable for everyone. I really miss this place.

Tucson Yoga is the best yoga studio ever. I mean, can you beat a $6 one and a half hour yoga class taught by a thoughtful yogi? This is truly a yoga studio for the People. The studio has a communal feel--minimal business and maximum community.  I've been attending classes here since I moved to Tucson a little over two years ago and I can't imagine relocating to another studio.

Great workshops, great weekly classes.  Leah and Joe offer invigorating and challenging practices on Monday and Tuesday nights (respectively), and Julie helps students link movement and meditation in her Sunday afternoon class.

Be sure to attend beginner classes if you've never done yoga before. There's not a lot of remedial instruction in the vinyasa classes.

Great studio, great teachers, especially Michelle. So nice and laid back, I never worry about how I look or how I'm dressed or even how I am feeling on any given day. I just do yoga which is great.

ONLY draw back is that it can get VERY crowded at times, which normally isn't a problem but one time the person next to me had the world's worst bo - so while I enjoy the freedom from the fashion police I do observe bathing rituals, so to speak. . .

But really, a great place to do yoga.

I started going to Tucson Yoga in July. Their prices cannot be matched by any other studio at this time.  I have not found anyone there to be cold or uncaring. In fact, if one makes an effort all of the instructors are more than happy to assist.

I ended up buying a 6 month pass for $240.00. Which is really affordable and if you take advantage of it you can go whenever.

Tucson Yoga provides blankets, bolsters, blocks, straps and eye pillows for their students to use in class. People are encouraged to use as many or as few props as necessary every time.

I would suggest maybe clarifying the silver stickers on the floor to everyone (they are for proper mat placement) that walks through the door to make sure everyone has enough space. I've had feet and arms dropped on me a few times now and that sort of sucks.

The classes can fill up rather quickly so giving yourself ample time to find it the first time is advisable.

I love the fact that every instructor (the ones I have taken classes with are Debbie, Julie Baron, Joanna, Leah, Joe and Gabrielle) always offers alternatives to any position.

Tucson yoga is an amazing studio. What makes it unique and beautiful is the teachers and the community of yogis who are both  just beggining their practice or continuing many years of practice.  Either way there is something for everyone.
The classes are affordable at $6, and $5 with pass packages, so even if you are curious you can check it out without it hurting your budget.
All of the teachers are wonderful and you can explore which ones are a good fit for you. I happen to love yong flow at a more vigorous pace, so I would recommend Michelle, Joe and Leah who offer many suggestions to make the practice your own and allow you to take it at your own pace.
I also love Joanna's class on Wednesday because it it mixed level so you can flow a little more, or take sweet gentle stretches. Michelle now has a Yin Yong  class on Saturday at 9am which is a wonderful slow to flowing class which is an amazing way to start your weekend.!
Voted Tucson's Best yoga studio four years in a row for many good reasons!!

Fun environment, good teachers, and remarkably inexpensive.

My second class at Tucson Yoga I forgot my money.  Debbie, the founder, said, "Don't worry about it.  Have a good class."  That's the attitude of a place where I want to do yoga.

As for the classes, it seems every teacher is different, with their own unique training, which I like and others may not.  It gives you a taste of many schools of yoga asana (poses).

I think Tucson Yoga is an ideal place to start and grow a yoga practice.

Probably one of the better places to go if you're stiff and need to get into shape for sex and its rigors.

The Wednesday night mix level class is fantastic. Joanna is a wonder. She's really warm and really creative. Always comes up with different versions of poses to match everyone's experience level.
The location may be a bit hard to find if you're not familiar with downtown, especially with the roadwork on Broadway, but it's worth the search.
The only complaint I can think of is the front/paying/leaving bags/etc area is a little awkwardly laid out. Maybe it would be better if the paying/signing -in area and the bookcase were switched?
I don't know, but I don't think it's a deterrent to attending classes.

Tucson Yoga was voted the best yoga place in Tucson for the year of 2005-2006.

Because I am not familiar with yoga, styles of yoga, yoga etiquette, I will simply give you a synopsis of my first visit:

* Its a downtown location that is hard to find if you use the directions given on their website. I drove around downtown, 4th avenue and through the UA campus about 2-3 times ... to find it.

* Please get there ahead of time as suggested. The classes fill up quickly (I think its about a max capacity of 40) . Because it took me forever to find the place, I stumbled in there late and as I reached into my purse to pull out my $5, all of my pennies fell onto the cement floor disturbing all of the peaceful yoga masters during their warm up.

* Wear clothes that are comfortable, but won't expose your cha cha's and mid-drift because you get to do some nifty little acrobat stunts at times.

* Expect to be in pain the next day, if you're doing everything right.

At the end of the day I was really satisfied with my yoga experience. For a lab rat like myself, this was a good 2 hour work out which uses your own body as resistance in toning and using those unused muscles. Unlike many other workouts I've done, this was the most complete. I felt all of my muscles being used (feet, buttocks, hamstrings, arms, delts, pects, etc.). I couldn't move the next 3 days.

The instructors are really friendly and passionate about their craft.... The instructors are also good as they have been on Oprah show or teach at Canyon Ranch, etc.

Guys, if you attend any class you will find yourself with other men, but a majority of the class is composed of ladies who don't believe in shaving. There is always those 4 or 5 hot chicks in the class, but they will not date you. People of all sizes and abilities attend these classes and no one feels inferior, intimidated or uncomfortable.

After one session my posture greatly improved and my back was elongated giving that catwalk stance. After a few sessions my boyfriend told me I looked like I was losing weight. (that's the power of secretly feeding your boyfriend barbiturates)....

What I rave about yoga is that after a session ... you feel really at peace and at ease. I don't do drugs (never have, never will) but its a strange drug induced effect you experience. Your legs are wobbly, you're in another dimension of time and space, its like you're numb to everything that was bothering you before you came. If I can get that mood altering experience after every workout without having to run 5-10 miles, I think its worth it.

$5 yoga? Ommmmmmm!
From Tucson Citizen blogs, 6/24/07

My yoga practice began in 2003. Since then I have practiced yoga at many different studios in three states and two countries. I have done hatha, anusara, ashtanga, iyengar and vinyasa. I even considered getting my teaching certification at one point, but for such an immaterial and earthy calling tuition is really expensive. Needless to say, I really like yoga.

That said, having tried a few of the less expensive studios in Tucson, and some of the more expensive ones, not one compares with the value and overall good feeling of Tucson Yoga .

At $5 a class for everyone, not just students, and less if you buy a membership or passes, it is by far the best deal for yoga in town.

I attend vinyasa classes and always walk away feeling invigorated and in tune with myself. Even if you don't believe in or derive spiritual clarity from it, the workout in these classes will leave you feeling like you just did and hour and a half of cardio and weight lifting all at the same time.

The studio is small and intimate (read: for the popular vinyasa classes you need to get there early to get a spot) so when we do a "sea of omms" at the end of class it fills the space and is truly an amazing feeling.

Debbie--I haven't been able to come to yoga lately, but I wanted to let you know how much I have loved having TY in my life, how much I appreciate it, and that I am sending you the best of wishes in your move and new stage of life! I am sure you will bring as much joy and beauty to your new community as you have brought here.
