Tucson Yoga is hosting an afternoon of fun and service at Tucson's newest community farm! All Tucson Yoga students, family and friends are invited and encouraged to join us. This is an opportunity to join together in community and recognize the people and spaces around us who are working toward positive change. There are so many ways to give, and offering our time and conscious efforts is one of them. We hope you’ll join us for this day of Karma Yoga - Yoga in Action - as we expand our definition of what yoga is!
About the Farm
Las Milpitas is a brand-new community farm that provides educational opportunities, capacity building, and a place for area residents to grow their own food. It also serves as a working demonstration site in desert food production, composting, ecological restoration, and permaculture for the greater Tucson community. City High School students are very involved, spending several afternoons a week at the farm and growing food for their culinary program, school events, and for students’ families. Additionally, over 100 community members are growing their own organic produce on the farm. Many of these folks live in the two adjacent trailer parks across the street from the site or in the surrounding neighborhood, where there is little space on property lots for a garden, and the nearest grocery store is more than 2 miles away. Many of these folks have also never gardened before!
Additionally, this site serves as an outdoor classroom for school field trips and community workshops on farming topics, and hosts the compost operation which turns local waste in a local resource used in low-income home and school gardens.
Volunteer activities will include digging garden beds, turning compost piles, planting in the demonstration garden, moving mulch, painting our ramadas or sheds, building up pathways, watering plants, or sorting seeds. Folks of all ages, levels of experience, and physical capacity are welcome!
