Kirtan! with Vasanta Weiss 20130913
Aap (Sanskrit for Water)
Join Vasanta and Jack Weiss, Mallika Rao, and Laura and Craig Greenlaw for a rockin' kirtan on September 13 at 7:30 pm at Tucson Yoga. Kirtan is an ancient tradition of call-and-response chanting of devotional songs to the accompaniment of harmonium, drums, and hand cymbals. Vasanta has chosen chants to invoke and pay respect to the Water element/Ocean of Creativity for this event.
Vasanta Weiss is a classically trained singer and pianist with background in jazz, blues, and opera. Jack Weiss has studied percussion and performed in bands in Dallas and San Francisco, and plays a variety of drum styles including Latin percussion and rock. Mallika Rao plays tabla and studies with Ty Burhoe, longtime student of Zakir Hussain. Laura Greenlaw is an ardent harmonium player and yoga teacher. Craig Greenlaw is a lifetime bluesman who brings his soulful playing to kirtan.
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the American Stroke Association in honor of Vasanta's grandmother.
